In the last few weeks, we’ve heard a lot of rumors about Elon Musk’s vision to generate more money via Twitter.

But now we have a clear idea of what Twitter numbers would look like under Tesla’s CEO. During the weekend, New York Times has published a report on Musk’s investors – and the goals described in it are quite ambitious.

Rocket fuels consumer growth

931 million. This is Musk’s goal for the number of users by 2028. This is huge by any measure. But for reference, let’s look at the current numbers for Twitter.

The company Results for the first quarter of 2022 estimate that there are 229 million active users per day (DAU) with a growth of 15.9% on an annual basis. Even if this growth rate continues, Twitter will reach only 550 million users by 2028.

The company will have to increase its customer base at an annual rate of 26% on an annual basis from now on to reach 931 million.

This is a difficult question, given that platforms such as Facebook and Netflix are finding it difficult to increase their audience. Even Snap, a company that does better than Facebook and Twitter, increased the number of its users by only 18% in the first quarter of 2022.

Moreover, since this is a deck of Musk, there are 69 (million) jokes. This is the number of paying consumers targeted by 2025.

High revenue targets

Musk’s project aims to make Twitter reach an annual revenue of $ 26.8 billion by 2028. By comparison, the company’s revenue last year was $ 5 billion.

The former PayPal CEO wants Twitter to stop relying entirely on revenue ads. He wants them to represent $ 12 billion by 2028 – almost 45% of revenue. It currently represents about 90% of the company’s business.

The NYT report notes that Musk expects $ 10 billion in subscription revenue by 2028. He also wants payments – offers such as shopping and tips – to generate $ 1.3 billion so far.

Everything else

There are a few other things Musk wants to do with the Twitter business, but the details are a bit blurry at the moment:

  • Create a mysterious product called X that will have 104 million subscribers by 2028.
  • The current workforce on Twitter is about 7,500 people. Musk wants to increase it to 9,225 by the end of 2022, reduce it to 8,332 by 2023 and increase it again to 11,072 by 2025. Such specific numbers will require micro-management and precise hiring. A tweet by Musk over the weekend shows that his vision will largely include hiring more engineers.
  • Increase average consumer revenue to $ 30.22 by 2028 – from $ 24.83 last year.

All of these goals are incredibly ambitious and will require a radical change on Twitter. There are many obstacles ahead, such as international laws and increasing regulation of major technology companies around the world to achieve sustainable growth.
