MOBILE, Alabama (WKRG) – The National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama has announced that the total number of tornadoes observed so far in 2022 is equal to the all-time record set in 2011.

The two EF-1 tornadoes that passed through the area on Friday morning increased the number of tornadoes for the year to 39 for the NWS Mobile coverage area. This area includes 12 counties in Alabama, 3 counties in Northwest Florida and 5 counties in Mississippi. NWS officials said they looked back at the 1950 and 2022 tornado records, which coincided with the one-year tornado record.

2022 is associated with the year of the “Super Epidemic”, 2011 with 39 tornadoes.

Southern Alabama has seen large numbers of tornadoes in other years. 2005 and 2002 are related to 30 tornadoes, 1995 are 29 tornadoes, 2020 are 27 tornadoes, and 2004 and 2001 are related to 25 tornadoes.
