Amazon’s newest entry-level Kindle has received its first discount in time for Black Friday. The company sells 2022 ad-supported Kindle for $85, or $15 below the official price. That makes it tempting if you’re planning a gift for the bookworm in your life, or you’ve just been waiting for a deal to treat yourself to Amazon’s most affordable e-reader.
The updated Kindle starter is a major upgrade. The centerpiece is a 6-inch display with 300 pixels per inch, which is much sharper than its predecessor’s 167 PPI screen, making text much easier on the eyes. A longer six-week battery life, USB-C charging and double the storage space (16GB) also make it decidedly more practical than the previous model. You may not need more than that to have the e-reader of your dreams, although you may want to pay extra to avoid lock screen ads.
However, if you need more, Amazon’s current Black Friday sale gives you options. Most notably, the Kindle Paperwhite is still available for $95. For that money, you won’t get as much storage (you’ll have to spend $100), but you’ll get a larger 6.8-inch display, bathroom-friendly water resistance, and adjustable warm light. However, if you don’t need these benefits or just want the smallest reader in the range, the basic Kindle is still easy to justify.
