In a bid to make the network more secure, Apple, Google and Microsoft announced on Thursday plans to expand support for a standard password-free login standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium.

The new feature will allow websites and applications to offer consistent, secure and easy password-free logins to users on different devices and platforms.

“This new capability is to introduce a new wave of low-friction FIDO deployment along with the continued and growing use of security keys – providing service providers with a full range of options for deploying modern, phishing-resistant authentication,” said Andrew Shikiar. , CEO and CMO of the FIDO Alliance.

While password managers and legacy forms of two-factor authentication offer gradual improvements, there is industry-wide collaboration to create login technology that is more convenient and secure.

Advanced standards-based capabilities will allow websites and applications to offer less end-to-end password.

Users will log in through the same action they take several times each day to unlock their devices, such as simply checking their fingerprint or face or device PIN.

This new approach protects against phishing and login will be radically more secure than passwords and legacy multi-factor technologies, such as one-time passwords sent via SMS.

Apple, Google and Microsoft have led the development of this extended set of capabilities and are now building support on their respective platforms.

This move allows users to automatically access their FIDO login credentials (referred to by some as the “password”) on many of their devices, even new ones, without having to re-register each account.

It will also allow users to use FIDO authentication on their mobile device to access an app or website on a nearby device, regardless of the platform or browser of the OS they are using.
