The launch of the Apple Watch 8 and Apple Watch Ultra just took place a few weeks ago, but here’s what to expect for the next edition.

The Apple Watch 9 is likely to be the brand’s next wearable and we expect it to arrive in 2023. Although we’re a year away from its launch and rumors are pretty sparse, this article compiles all the information and speculation we currently have on attitude of the new smart watch.

Release date

Following previous trends, the Apple Watch Series 9 is most likely to be launched in September 2023, alongside the new iPhone 14. This is based on previous years’ launch schedules, which you can see listed below:

  • Apple Watch Series 8: September 16, 2022
  • Apple Watch Series 7: October 15, 2021
  • Apple Watch Series 6: September 18, 2020
  • Apple Watch Series 5: September 20, 2019
  • Apple Watch Series 4: September 21, 2018

The Apple Watch Series 9 will then be available for purchase in stores a few days after this launch.

Price

The price of the Apple Watch has remained roughly the same for the past few years, but there has been a slight increase this year, at least for UK customers. While the price in the US remained at $399, in the UK it was raised to £419, while the previous model cost £399.

Based on this information, we at least hope that the price is likely to remain similar to this year, with an increase unlikely to happen two years in a row after not happening in several previous years. We’ve yet to come across any credible rumors regarding price, but we’re keeping our eyes open for any activity on the matter.

What we would like to see

Considering how early we are in the new watch’s development cycle, it’s no surprise that we haven’t come across many credible rumors yet. However, we’ve certainly considered what might arrive in the new watch to set it apart from previous generations. Given that the Apple Watch Series 8 was a relatively minor upgrade, can we expect a major jump in specs from its sequel?

Apple Watch Series 8

First of all, there has been a lot of speculation about whether the new watch will have 5G connectivity. Cellular editions of previous watches in the series, even the Apple Watch Ultra, have LTE connectivity, but not yet 5G. Perhaps the Apple Watch Series 9 could be the first to boast the fastest mobile data speeds available.

On top of that, while we’ve seen Apple release Mini LED display technology for the MacBook and iPad Pro, we’ve yet to see this different type of screen on any of its wearables. Could the Apple Watch Series 9 be the first with a Mini LED display?

Finally, we fully expect the next Apple Watch to run on a new chipset. It’s standard for a manufacturer’s latest wearable to boast all-new silicon, and we don’t expect the Apple Watch Series 9 to be an exception to that rule.
