Two AIs created by Meta can defeat skilled human players in the classic World War I strategy game Diplomacy. AIs had to learn how to partially cooperate with other players, an element that most other gaming AIs don’t have to consider.

“There’s a pretty unique feature here of diplomacy being collaborative and competitive at the same time, which makes it exciting,” says Georgios Yanakakis at the University of Malta, who was not involved in the study.
