As part of its efforts to bring together different brands and technologies under Expedia Group umbrella, the online travel giant, has unveiled a new technology platform called Open World.

Announced last week at the Expedia Group Explore partner event, the platform is designed for partners to use and configure products and services and contains a full suite of e-commerce with components such as payments, fraud, calls and services.

Expedia Group CTO Rati Murtie calls Open World a “huge unlock for us” because the platform brings together data and capabilities that have so far been fragmented between different brands.

He thinks of the set of solutions – which include search, sorting, content and service – as traditional “lego blocks” of an online travel agency. Although historically the Expedia Group could only implement these solutions for its larger partners due to its complexity, with the Open World platform it can “serve a partner of any size and be easy to use”.

“After looking at what [Expedia Group was doing with] great partners, we have found a game-changing new way to take advantage of our technology, ”she says. “We are now ‘deconstructing’ the building blocks of online travel.”

Unlock opportunities

With Open World, Merty says partners can unlock new revenue opportunities to meet their specific needs. “It’s different from anything else in the industry,” she said.

“If you are an airline and you want to offer cars to travelers, we will have the building blocks for you. If you are a hotel and you want payments and service, here are the building blocks. ”

“This democratizes the travel business,” Murty continued, adding that the platform allows anyone from TikTok influencers to destination marketing organizations to developers to access Expedia Group’s technology.

“We want to have a full range of tools to serve the entire breadth of the industry,” said Karen Bolda, senior vice president of product and technology, search for partner solutions at Expedia Group. “At Expedia, we focus on the traveler, and the only way to do that is if the whole ecosystem benefits.

Arian Gorin, president of Expedia for Business, added: “We’ve all spent too much time and energy figuring out who owns the client.

“The truth is that the passenger’s need is a matter of use. We are restructuring the technology platform to make it accessible to all partners so that the whole market and [each business] can use abilities. “

With the development of the platform, it will become a place where developers, data scientists, marketers and entrepreneurs can create new ways to promote and enable people to travel.

“With the development of Open World, the benefits increase and the travel universe expands,” says Murty.
