MOUNTAIN VIEW – Google opened its canopied Bay View campus at NASA’s Ames in Mountain View this week, saying 4,000 people will work in the futuristic green complex, powered by dragon-like solar panels.

The development of three buildings, together with the Google Charleston East project in Mountain View, which is due to open in 2023, represents a change for technological titanium.

“This is the first time we’ve developed one of our own large campuses,” said David Radcliffe, vice president of real estate and workplace services. “The process has given us the opportunity to rethink the very idea of an office.”

The result is an eye-catching campus that has sprung up at NASA’s Ames Research Center, a group of buildings ready to offer new ways people work and interact with employees in a world upside down since the beginning of the coronavirus.

Google began building the complex in 2017, a few years before the coronavirus struck in 2020, launching a pandemic that dramatically changed attitudes toward personal office work – as well as the very nature of how those offices will be designed and operated.

With vaccines available and fears stemming from the deadly virus began to weaken, technology titans like Google gradually pulled workers back into the office. Companies advertise the value of face-to-face cooperation.

The new campus has a total area of 1.1 million square feet, consisting of two large office buildings, an event center with 1,000 people and a residential complex of four buildings with 220 rooms that will take a short stay for employees.

Google-based Mountain View says it has created the campus – which was designed in collaboration with world-renowned architects Bjarke Ingels Group and Heatherwick Studio – with the needs and desires of employees above all else.

“For those who come to the office, it is designed to balance the desire of Google employees to come together as teams with the need for an environment that allows for deeply focused work,” said Google.

The interior of the buildings includes a combination of wide open spaces with 30 courtyards or atriums, as well as small rooms where people can go out into separate workspaces.

“Team spaces are at the top level, and gathering places are at the bottom, separating the focus and collaboration areas, while providing easy access to both,” Google said in an email to the news organization.

The design of the second floor has variations in the floor tiles to give the teams a certain “neighborhood” area, which is very flexible to change depending on their needs, according to Google.

The interior includes large sections in the upper levels, which allow plenty of natural light inside the buildings.

“We want people to have daylight, but not too many direct sunlight,” said Michelle Kaufman, director of real estate and workplace services, research and development.

The campus will use solar panels resembling dragon scales on the roof in harmony with the geothermal piles under the office complex to create an energy device that can cool the huge structure in hot weather and heat it in cold weather.

“This is the largest geothermal energy system in North America,” said Asim Tahir, director of real estate and workplace services, energy and carbon.

Approximately 50,000 dragon-scale solar panels are installed on the outside of the building.

Locals will also be able to benefit from the new Bay View campus in many ways. These include public access to extended trails with panoramic views of the bay, improved bike links to Stevens Creek and Bay trails, and expanded car lanes and new bike lanes with the expansion of RT Jones Road.

The campus includes 17.3 acres of high-value natural areas, including wet meadows, forests and swamps, which are contributing to Google’s wider efforts to restore missing basic habitats in the Gulf region.

The complex also creates a workspace that fits into the new world of work after a pandemic.

The upper floor is divided into smaller neighborhoods, separated by courtyards and connected by ramps that gradually rise as people move toward the center of the building.

This variation in the floor tiles gives the teams a certain area that changes with their needs. But design also keeps people close to their larger work community.

“The result is a building where you can feel connected to people, whether they’re in your larger organization of 2,000 people, your team of 50 people, or your immediate working group of 10 people,” Radcliffe said in a blog post. campus.
