Heraeus Electronics today announced the launch of its new soft laser tapes PowerCu (LRB) for laser bonding at PCIM Europe in Nuremberg. This innovative optimized copper strip has been proven to effectively achieve greater efficiency and stability in power electronic systems. It allows operating temperatures of the module higher than 250 ° C and allows projects with the highest power density.

In power electronics, the current capacity limit will be reached one day by connecting wires. Tape connection offers an alternative to wire connection and automated tape connection (TAB) and is attractive because many conventional ultrasonic wedge / wedge wiring devices can be easily adapted to work with tapes.

Laser tape bonding is a new field of application for laser micro welding in the electronics industry, especially in the field of power electronics. It is particularly suitable for connecting a connecting wire to battery terminals and on DCB substrates and copper terminals in power supply modules. Laser connection achieves the application of band connection for much higher currents.

Compared to standard copper bonding tapes, the PowerCu-Soft LRB is available with a special one-sided roughening to ensure a more reliable connection of the laser beam to the highly reflective copper surface. The roughening process allows a clean and homogeneous surface without residues. The PowerCu-Soft LRB can be processed with all currently available laser connection equipment.

PowerCu-Soft LRB is ideal for power supplies and batteries designed for high currents. In addition, cost optimization within production (UPH improvement) can be achieved by upgrading wires to strips. One PowerCu-Soft LRB (0.3x2mm) can replace up to three 500µm Cu wires.
