Security can be tricky with your smartphone, especially for Android users.

What are some of the best ways to protect your device (and yourself!) From malicious actors, illegal surveillance, and malware?

Our sponsor, ExpressVPNrecently shared five easy ways to configure your Android device for a safer and more personal experience. They should all be on your list if they are not already.

Hide your location history on Google

The first task on this list has several obvious advantages. Your location history can make you vulnerable to worst-case pursuers. Scary? Yes, and Google has been tracking your location since you first started using Google Maps.

Unless you rely on your Google Location History for one reason or another, you need to disable it. This is how:

  • Open up Settings.
  • Tap confidentiality > Google Location History.
  • Tap Turn it off.
  • Scroll down and tap Pause.

Once you do this, you will be asked if your old data needs to be deleted. Tap Delete the old activity and strikes I got it to conclude a transaction.

While ExpressVPN notes that you will need a VPN to completely hide your location, your Google Account will be separated by this method.

Clean up your permissions manager

After years of using an Android device, apps tend to accumulate. At one point, many of them needed permission to use the camera, microphone, or contacts.

You can keep access to your device exclusive by revoking the allowance for odds and targets that you no longer use. This is a great solution for applications that you use infrequently, but not every day.

Here’s how to turn off application permissions:

  • Open up Settings.
  • Tap confidentiality > Permission Manager.
  • Tap each permission.
  • For the applications you have set up Allowed all the time or Allowed only during useset it to Do not allow.

When we looked at our own permit manager, we didn’t recognize half of the garbage we had accumulated. Good disposal of bad garbage, at least for now.

Turn off use and diagnostics

Use and diagnostics are Big Tech’s smart ways to use your data, supposedly for a better experience for you and others in the future. Everything from the applications you use to the life of your battery every day is taken into account.

The constant broadcasting of all this extremely personal information on the air is dangerous. Giving up, fortunately, is easy if you prefer to keep your business a secret.

Here’s how to turn off Usage and Diagnostics:

  • Open up Settings.
  • Tap confidentiality > Use and diagnostics.
  • Turn off the switch.

It is much less likely that personal information, such as your contact information, will fall into the wrong hands.

Disable your Android customization services

Customizing Android works just like Google ads. Your data is collected, your preferences and needs are identified and you are presented with selected content and suggestions at every possible crossroads.

Unless you want to see recommended apps selected by the machine just for you, disabling this feature is another ExpressVPN recommendation. This is how:

  • Open up Settings.
  • Tap confidentiality > Android personalization service.
  • Turn off the switch.

Turn off ad personalization

Finally, the big one. To stop contributing to your Google Play ad ID, you must turn off ad customization. This is how:

  • Open up Settings.
  • Tap confidentiality > Advertisements.
  • Switch Opt out of personalizing ads On.

There is only one switch to fight and you will be asked to confirm that you would actually like to split up.

This is a simple list of the most important things for privacy, but even these five tips for Android can save you a lot of trouble (or at least a little disappointment later).

For true privacy protection, you need to include a reliable VPN. We recommend ExpressVPN.
