WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Some Washington lawmakers are on edge after a man attacked the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., with a hammer at their San Francisco home.

Rep. Debbie Dingle, D-Mich., who has known Pelosi for decades, called the incident unacceptable.

“I hope this is a wake-up call,” Dingle said. “As someone who has people outside of their homes with combat weapons who have received threats, I worry about my staff … and there are elected officials at all levels who are really starting to get scared.”

MPs from both sides of the aisle condemned the violence.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., tweeted that he is disgusting and horrible. The White House said the president called the speaker directly to wish paul pelosi a full recovery.

San Francisco police said they have not determined a motive for the attack. But on This is reported by the Associated Press that the 42-year-old suspect yelled “where’s Nancy?” before the attack.

According to US Capitol Police, the spokeswoman was at her home in Washington with security at the time of the attack.

Capitol police said threats against lawmakers increased after the Jan. 6 riot and led to increased security.

This summer, Democrats and Republicans passed legislation to increase security for Supreme Court justices after a gunman targeted Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home.

Dingle said while more security is helpful, there is a better solution.

“We all have a responsibility to help tone it down,” she said.
