Barcelona Supercomputing Center – The National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) and Lenovo are working in partnership to advance research in a number of high-performance computing sectors in Spain and the EU. Lenovo will invest $ 7 million over three years to improve precision medicine through the use of supercomputers; the design and development of European open source chips (type RISC-V); and the creation of more energy-sustainable supercomputers and data centers.

Efficient analysis of large-scale genomic data will be key to advancing precision medicine and generating new treatments for diseases such as cancer. Thus, one of the cooperation projects between Lenovo and BSC-CNS is aimed at improving and accelerating precision medicine with the help of supercomputers.
The BSC-CNS team, led by researcher Mikel Moreto, will study genomic analysis algorithms to design new accelerators that will be integrated into the HPC platforms of the future and will serve to improve the efficiency of these extremely complex analyzes. The algorithms created and optimized by the BSC-CNS team will focus on GOAST (Genomics Optimization and Scalability Tool), developed by Lenovo to optimize and improve genomic analysis. In addition, these analysis tools will be extended to other disciplines such as epigenetics, metagenomics, microbiology, virology and other areas of life and health sciences.
More sustainable and energy efficient supercomputers
The joint study between BSC-CNS and Lenovo will focus on building more energy-efficient, sustainable and cheaper supercomputers and data centers.
This new research project will seek more powerful, flexible and robust energy saving systems within infrastructure solutions, such as energy optimization and management software. They will seek to incorporate new technologies developed by INTEL into algorithms recently developed by Corbalan’s team. The project will also seek to extend and monitor energy cost control to the entire infrastructure architecture.
