What is happening

Mercedes annoys the Maybach version of the SL roadster.

Why it matters

This will be the first in the history of Maybach SL.

What next

Maybach SL should be unveiled next year.

Mercedes-Benz wants to move to a higher market by announcing on Thursday that it plans to reduce the number of entry-level models the brand offers, in favor of more volume and higher-profit high-end models. Part of this plan will be the expansion of the Maybach model line, which will create a super luxurious version of the new roadster SL.

This is an interesting move since seventh generation SL is designed, developed and engineered by AMG performance Mercedes and is marked as Mercedes-AMG, not Mercedes-Benz. Virtually no details about the Mercedes-Maybach SL have been given other than just the announcement that this is happening, but two teaser images give us an idea of what to expect.

I’m digging the colorful hood.

Maybach SL will be the first SL in history to wear a straight ornament on the hood with three star beams, which is quite funny to see on a modern sports car. In addition, it will receive the large chrome grille of the Maybach waterfall, a unique bumper design with more chrome trim and a two-tone color scheme with a black lid, which features a repeating pattern of the Maybach logo. Beyond what you see in the images, expect different wheels, additional chrome trim on the body, a new rear bumper and other fine-tuning. While we doubt that the Maybach SL will have an extended wheelbase for more interior space, it should have more sophisticated interior trim such as extra metal pieces and plush leather upholstery.

Mercedes has also announced a new branch of Mythos that will create super-limited, highly coveted vehicles based on existing models, similar to what competing luxury brands are doing. The first will be the speedster version of the SL, whose silhouette was teased by design chief Gordon Wagener. It seems that every Mythos vehicle can be inspired by a different model from Mercedes’ past, which can be a wide range of vehicle types.

This also looks super cool.
