“We believe this platform has the potential to reshape the way we think about materials and clothing. The men's version of the Forward hoodie

What’s special is that Nike Forward results in a 75% reduction in the carbon footprint during production compared to Nike’s traditional knitted fleece. The process allows the use of several thin layers of carefully selected material to balance softness with warmth and performance. The simplified process results in fewer steps in the manufacturing process. Instead of continuing traditional processes for knit and woven materials, Nike Forward looks forward to a new way of doing things.

“The Nike Forward feels different because it’s different. It’s not a traditional knit or fabric, but a completely new material that dramatically reduces its carbon footprint,” said Carmen Zolman, Vice President of Apparel Design Innovation, NIKE, Inc.

Additionally, the streamlined process of converting fibers into textiles using a needle punching process means skipping several steps in typical manufacturing. Every step missed means a reduction in the required amount of energy, water and human resources.

Nike have taken the minimalist approach one step further with an ultra-simplistic hoodie design that forgoes dyes and extras like zips and tabs. Raw-cut pockets provide a distinct look, saving extra materials and energy. The finished sweatshirt is made up of 70% recycled content, contributing to the company’s circular goals.

Nike is no stranger to innovation and commitment to corporate responsibility. Nike Forward is just the latest in a long line of efforts to continually raise the bar on performance and commitment to bettering the planet.
