The creators of this new Obi-Wan Kenobi the miniseries have done a clever job of making a a dynamic, captivating and above all heroic adventure. At least in the first two episodes, anyway. So let’s have fun with a (very spoiler) in-depth summary of episodes 1 and 2, including character arches and Easter eggs (and this dramatic Star Wars cameo).

Ewan McGregor plays the role of the Jedi General, no longer the ignorant young man from the prehistory, but not the old man with the gray mustache, played by Alec Guinness in the original 1977 film. both the continuity of Star Wars and the intriguing new elements.

The first two of the show’s six episodes are available now, with more to follow every Wednesday from June 1st to June 22nd. If you haven’t watched the show yet, be warned that the first episode begins with scenes of attacked children, which can upset viewers after Texas School Shooting.

When was the last time we saw Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The series begins with a summary of the backstory, which saves you six hours of your life (I’m kidding, they are not so bad). Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi master and enemy of the evil Galactic Empire, began in prehistory as an apprentice to Liam Neeson’s ill-fated Jedi Qui-Gon Jin, who discovers a very young Anakin Skywalker in the desert world of Tatooine. After Qui-Gon’s death, Kenobi tries to train Anakin, but can’t stop his troubled young protégé from coming under the influence of the evil Emperor Palpatine. Eventually, Anakin succumbed to the Dark Side, especially after the death of his love Padme Amidala.

The last time they met, it was high up, where Obi-Wan cut off Anakin’s legs and let him melt in a volcano. Anakin’s last words to Obi-Wan were “I hate you!” to which Obi-Wan replied sadly, “You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you.”

These moments, these deaths haunt Obi-Wan still in his nightmares. But episode 2 culminates in the intensity of a personal relationship. We know that Anakan has been rebuilt like the black helmet and asthmatic Darth Vader, more of a machine than a human. But Obi-Wan had no idea! Which greatly increases the stakes of his mission to protect Anakin’s twin children: the young Leah, adopted by the galactic senator Bale Alderaan’s Organ, and the young Luke sent to live with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru on Tatooine.

Ten years later, the miniseries begins …

What is Obi-Wan doing?

Wandering in the desert, watching mostly Luke. We will begin 10 years after the Revenge of the Sith and nine years before A New Hope, in an era after the Jedi Order was nearly destroyed. Obi-Wan hides, calling himself Ben, and humbly exists as a meat packer in the corpse of a giant desert creature. He even rejects the desperate pleas of another persecuted Jedi, the young Nari (played by actor, writer and director Benny Safdi).

Although still young, Luke is already showing signs of anxiety, which led him to embark on a new adventure in the first film. When he plays the role of a pilot, it causes shivers in Obi-Wan’s spine with the echo of young Anakin’s races in The Phantom Menace. And we know that this portends Luke’s later coming of age as a pilot who destroyed the Death Star.

Speaking in advance, Luke was raised by Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, played as in the prequels by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piese. In New Hope, it’s fair to say that things are getting pretty hot for the unhappy couple, which adds to Owen’s plea to Obi-Wan to leave the boy alone. Edgerton is an award-winning Australian actor, writer and director known for the Animal Kingdom, the Gift, Love and the Great Gatsby.

Help me, Obi-Wan

But the show does something like switching when it turns out Luke isn’t in danger. Reflecting the beginning of New Hope, Obi-Wan receives a holographic message begging him to come to Princess Leia’s aid. This time it’s his old friend Bale Organa, played by Jimmy Smith, who also reprises his role from the prehistory, and his wife Breha.

Charmingly played by Vivienne Lyra Blair, young Leah is a fierce slut, more interested in escaping into the woods on a spaceship with her droid Lola than in royal duties. Her relationship with Obi-Wan reminds us of the dynamics of a tough boy / sweet child The Mandalorian, but more importantly, we get strong Leon: The Professional vibes. Which can’t be a coincidence, as Natalie Portman starred in Luke Besson’s 1994 hit just a few years before playing Padme Amidala (Luke and Leah’s mother and Anakin’s great love) in Star Wars backstory.

Who are the inquisitors?

A major step in Palpatine’s scheme to establish his evil empire was to destroy the idealistic Jedi Knights who might oppose him. The series begins with Order 66, at a time when many Jedi have been treacherously killed by cloned Palpatine soldiers in the Revenge of the Sith. But he survived long enough for the Emperor to create a death squad of Jedi hunters: the Inquisitors.

The Inquisitors with the Dark Side have been seen before in the CGI animated series Rebels and the video game Jedi: Fallen Order. Their fortress from the game will also appear in the show, as seen in the trailer. Among the characters we’ve seen before, Rupert Friend brings to life the Grand Inquisitor with a moon face, while Sung Kang plays the Fifth Brother.

Uncle Owen and Sister Reva face each other.

Moses Ingram plays Reva, an inquisitor created for the Obi-Wan series. Her relationship with the Grand Inquisitor reflects the Jedi’s teaching style of recruiting a student to become a Jedi Master. Like Anakin and many young people, Reva is ambitious and impatient. She is also something of an outsider whose strength is useful to imperial officers, who will nevertheless never allow her to forget her humble origins. Ingram brings the character to life and yes, in case you can’t tell, I’m slightly rooted in her. She is a sadistic fascist, but also a multi-layered character. This is clever writing.

New heroes

Yes, this is the bassist of Red Hot Chilli Peppers Flea as the space hijacker Vect. But the funniest new character is the deceiver Kumail Nanjiani, who pretends to be a Jedi. At least he proves that he has a decent heart, despite all the good it brings him.

Obi-Wan quickly noticed that Haja Estri was using magnets and remotes to make his Jedi agile, but for a moment I wondered if Haja was really a former Jedi. After all, when the young people dispersed, they would not become wandering heroes of the oppressed like the unfortunate Nari. Understandably, some would come up with new and potentially shady ways to survive.

This cameo

When Obi-Wan arrives in Dayu’s dark place, he is shocked to meet a poor war veteran begging for clippings. Played by the old vet is played by Bob Fett’s book star Temuera Morrison, who also plays Bob Jango Fett’s father in the backstory. Django provided the template for Palpatine’s army of cloned soldiers, and Obi-Wan fought alongside many of these identical soldiers in the Clone Wars (as seen in the cartoons). No wonder he looks shocked. There is also the bitter irony of a soldier forced by a careless regime to perform indescribable actions, then rejected (and simply replaced by a new harvest of indisputable triggers, in the form of stormtroopers who sneak into this scene).

When is the next episode?

Disney released the first few installments to coincide with the live event Star Wars holiday, but future episodes air on Wednesday. This means you only have to wait a few days for episode 3, which airs on June 1. here it is full schedule for the rest of the series.

If you want to fill even more of the gaps or just can’t wait to get your decision on Obi-Wan’s action, CNET’s guide to everything, Kenobi includes a handy list of animated TV shows, novels and comics starring a man in a robe.

Random Obi-Servations

  • How could Reva read Hajja Estri’s thoughts, but not Owen’s?
  • It remains unfeasible for Ewan McGregor, who is 51 and doesn’t look like he has turned gray Alec Guinness between the show and New Hope. Funny as it was, Guinness was 62 when he made New Hope, only 10 years older than McGregor now. Then again, to paraphrase another character associated with George Lucasnot the years, but the mileage.
  • In New Hope, Uncle Owen introduces Obi-Wan, trying to repel young Luke: “This wizard is just a crazy old man. Stay away from him, can you hear me? He is dangerous”.
  • In 1977, Uncle Owen was played by Phil Brown, an actor who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and moved to the United Kingdom. He died in 2006. Aunt Beru was played by Shela Fraser, an English actor whose career stretched from the 1940s to her last television appearance in 2000. She died the same year.
  • I have no idea if we’ll ever see an Aquilian ranger hunt for Merson pirates, but that sounds cool. Just one of the neat little details for building the world in the show.
