Red Hat, one of the world’s largest open source software players, released a number of new features for its leading enterprise Linux distribution – some of which focused on peripheral computing – this week at its annual summit.
The Red Hat Edge initiative is a project designed to streamline peripheral infrastructure deployment and management processes, and under its flag, the company has announced several new features such as automation technology through Ansible and advanced cluster management for Kubernetesby the way.
The idea here is to build on Red Hat ‘s core enterprise Linux and OpenShift platforms to offer new ways to deploy end technologies. Providing zero-touch devices with OpenShift is a key new feature, along with pre-designed “proven models” to provide a quick and easy basis for deploying new software stacks, whether for computer makers looking to simplify sales, or for companies that want to design their own technology
In addition, a technological overview of more edge-relevant OpenShift deployment models is now available – including, for the first time, single-node support for OpenShift.

Edge security matters
Red Hat also announced new security features at this year’s summit. In addition to security models for the software supply chain – essentially cryptographically signed configurations of “known good” code – the company has introduced improvements to its Advanced Cluster Security for the Kubernetes platform.
These include automated DevSecOpsproviding integration for configuration analysis, CI / CD (continuous integration / continuous deployment) integration and vulnerability management, as well as new threat detection, incident response capabilities and network segmentation features.
According to Red hat vice president of product security Vincent Danen, the new features are an integral part of the more holistic approach to security that today’s threat environment poses.
“IT security is not tied to a software release or plug-in; it must be embedded in whatever technology an organization chooses, from the basis of the operating system to the level of the application, “he said in a statement. “Improved security capabilities in Red Hat’s hybrid cloud portfolio are designed to help provide less complex, high-security operations, no matter where an organization operates.
