The Vegan Society has been helping people identify plant-based products since 1990, and in recent weeks, Smurfit Kappa has become the first packaging company to receive a vegan certification. Smurfit Kappa’s acquisition of the Vegan Society trademark also marks a huge milestone in the 60,000 products registered in the scheme.

No other packaging company is registered under the Vegan trademark, and this has become possible for Smurfit Kappa thanks to the Markham Vale website in the United Kingdom. Our vegan certified packaging products are manufactured using corrugated solutions that are both vegan and environmentally friendly.

Vegan certified packaging

Smurfit Kappa is proud to be the leading supplier of corrugated cardboard in Europe and one of the most renowned suppliers of paper packaging in the world. Working in 36 countries, with 48,000 employees and more than 350 packaging plants, it is better to take the title as the first certified packaging solution provider in history.

All Vegan branded products are made using paper, glue, starch and inks that are sourced from environmentally conscious suppliers and do not contain animal products. We supply a wide range of vegan-approved packaging options that are suitable for many products, including fashion, cosmetics, food, beverages and more.

Many companies work hard to produce products that are certified by the Company, but then pack them in boxes and bags that do not follow the same guidelines. Smurfit Kappa can now offer the option of vegan-certified packaging to match vegan-certified products.

Ongoing partnership with the Vegan Society

In addition to becoming the world’s first certified vegan packaging supplier, Smurfit Kappa is pleased to announce an ongoing partnership with The Vegan Society. Smurfit Kappa will be available to help other trademark owners produce vegan-certified packaging for their plant-based product ranges.

A vegan society recently conducted a survey that found that 97% of vegans and vegetarians would seek vegan food and beverage testing before making a purchase. Moreover, a study completed in 2021 confirmed that the Vegan brand from The Vegan Society is the most trusted and recognized scheme for labeling plant-based products. The verification symbol is now used in 60,000 products worldwide, including food, beverages, clothing, household items and more.

Markham Robinson, Senior Business Development Manager at Smurfit Kappa Markham Vale, said: “At Smurfit Kappa, we are proud to provide innovative and sustainable packaging. We are excited to be the first packaging company to be recognized by the Vegan Society. This accreditation will reassure customers with a preference for vegan products that all components of our finished products are non-cruel and non-animal. ”

Ericka Durgahee, Marketing Manager for Business Development at The Vegan Society, added: “Announcing our partnership with Smurfit Kappa could not have come at a better time. They are not only the first packaging company to register products with us, but they are also the 60,000th product owned by the Vegan brand. We have come a long way since registering our first product in 1990. ”
