Hirose recently introduced a high-power hybrid FPC-to-board connector that supports up to 15A in a space-saving housing that reduces PCB mounting space by up to 40%. The BM50 series, which is designed for mobile devices with built-in batteries or USB connections, reports a significant reduction in both the area used inside the device and the size of the customer’s end products. In addition, the BM50 connector allows more flexibility in design. USB can be placed anywhere in the design of the final product by using FPC to connect it to the PCB.
The design of the BM50 connector shortens the length of the electricity flow to reduce heat generation when high current is used, thanks to two contact mounting points. Even when 15A is applied, this one-of-a-kind PCB design limits heat generation to 30 ° C or less. In this way, the resistance of the contacts is reduced, which allows higher power and up to 100 W of power to be delivered via USB for fast charging.
For increased strength and a significant reduction in the risk of damage to the hull from mismatch during mating, the fully armored structure covers both ends of the hull with metal. A wide self-alignment range of 0.24 mm in the step direction and 0.2 mm in the width direction, combined with guide ribs, ensures a smooth pairing operation.
“As power consumption increases in tandem with advances in smartphone functionality, so does the capacity and space to mount the installed battery. At the same time, the demand for smaller, thinner smartphones is increasing, making it difficult to find a balance between reducing the size of the device and larger batteries. Longer charging times are the result of higher battery capacity, and the demand for fast charging is increasing, “agreed Mark Kodjak, vice president of sales and marketing for Hirose Electric USA. “As a result, the connectors used to connect the battery must be small and have a high power capacity. To meet these requirements, Hirose created the BM50 series.
