Tecno showcases the Phantom Ultimate Prototype with a removable display at MWC 2024

Tecno showcased its Phantom Ultimate prototype with a movable display at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona. The Chinese tech brand’s first foldable concept phone has a different form factor than the current foldable. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate boasts a 6.55-inch display that expands to 7.11 inches at the touch of a button. The handset has an additional display on the back.

Subsidiary of Transsion Holdings took it wraps Phantom Ultimate during MWC 2024 offering hands-on experience for Gadgets360. The device features a 6.55-inch display that wraps around the left edge. With the push of a button, the 7.11-inch AMOLED screen rises out of the handset in 1.3 seconds. It provides a tablet-sized display and offers a more flexible and immersive viewing experience.

Tecno Phantom Ultimate

When tucked away, the handset gets a dual-sided display. The display wraps horizontally around the back of the handset and shows the time and notifications. The device is 9.93 mm thick. Tecno Phantom Ultimate supports customizable dynamic wallpapers, desktop effects and always-on display (AOD). The 7.11-inch display is said to have a resolution of 1,596×2,296 and a pixel density of 388ppi. The dynamic low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display is said to provide 100% coverage of DCI-P3 TYP wide color gamut and a refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.

Since it is a concept phone, the general launch of Tecno Phantom Ultimate might not happen soon. The brand had already shown the prototype in September 2022 during IFA. However, the advent of sliding technology is paving the way for a new era of sliding phones.

Brands like Vivo, Oppo, Motorola, LG and Samsung have announced similar concepts in recent years. Motorola showed off a removable display on the Rizr concept phone that can wrap around the wrists.
