Tesla study, BP’s fast-charging Gigahubs, fossil fuel peak in 2020: today’s auto news

The SEC and DOJ are reportedly stepping up their action on Tesla’s self-driving claims. BP is building the first of its expanded rapid charging centers near LAX. And will demand for fossil fuels peak this decade? That and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Oil giant BP plans to build a series of large-scale ‘Gigahubs’ – EV fast-charging centers aimed at fast-haul vehicles. The first will offer 48 charging ports and will be built near LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Tesla is reportedly facing multiple new levels of scrutiny from both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) — both reportedly over Tesla’s self-driving claims. Neither the DOJ nor the SEC has yet confirmed any of these potential actions, which rely on reports from Reuters and on Wall Street Journal citing insiders.

A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) suggests that global demand for fossil fuels will peak this decade. Due in part to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the energy and economic uncertainty it has caused, government spending on renewable energy has soared – and this could mark a “historic turning point” in the transition away from fossil fuels, the IEA expects.
