The luxury electric RV cat takes to the water on its way to a seaside glamping adventure

When we looked at the Swedish-designed Pol Lux earlier this year, it was still in the rendering stage. We weren’t sure the unconventional craft would even make it further than that, but half a year later it’s on tour and testing in the water. The unique RV features a stable catamaran platform, electric propulsion powered by solar panels, a pop-up tent, a modular deck layout and even an overwater hammock lounger. It’s a new way to enjoy the water all day and night.

After crafting the hull and assembling the superstructure over the summer, Pol held Lux’s official world premiere in Stockholm last month. It said the boat generated a lot of interest at the show and served as a support vessel for the ÖTILLÖ Swim/Run Championships. It appeared most recently at the Hamnen Electric Boat Show last weekend in Stockholm.

Pol was still waiting for the tent fabric from Lux’s debut to be finished, so the boat had yet to show its water camping capabilities on camera. However, the company uses an 18-kWh built-in battery to heat a kettle, something that could be called all-electric water camping. The lounge with a hammock mounted on the front of the boat is also officially open for business.

The Lux deck is set up more like a camper than a typical catamaran, relying on a modular sofa layout to convert into a bed at night. The tent fabric fastens around the boat’s roof frame, creating a weatherproof barrier to protect sleepers from the elements. We’re sure Lux captains won’t want to camp in raging storms destined to be told for decades by grizzled, leather-faced sailors, but the tent should be sufficient for the basic night breeze and torrential rain.

Additional overnight guests can take advantage of the available hammock that mounts to the ship’s frame above the wheel station. However, even if someone is sleeping sitting on the outdoor floating hammock (we wouldn’t recommend it), the Lux seems too cozy to fit anywhere near its full capacity of 13 people at night – owners will probably want to stick to day trips to host a dozen friends.

Paul says the Lux can reach speeds of up to 11 knots (20 km/h). Easing back to a cruising speed of 7 knots (13 km/h) opens up a maximum range of 60 nautical miles (111 km/h). The solar sail mode allows the vessel to move forward at 4 knots (7 km/h) solely on the power obtained from the roof-mounted solar panels.

Pol is preparing the Lux for launch and plans to offer it at a base price of €99,000 (approximately US$98,650) excluding VAT. Since the all-electric catamaran day boat is an attractive product in itself, the base price will not include the tent fabric. Pol plans to finalize pricing for this option in the coming weeks. It is also currently offering test drives in Stockholm for interested buyers.
