The application upgrade platform provider vFunction has launched a new tool called the vFunction Assessment Hub to help CIOs and other IT decision makers understand the complexity and risk of their existing legacy applications before deciding to upgrade them, a process that usually involves taking on technical debt.
Market demand for faster and better services, along with the pandemic’s impact on revenue and operations, has put pressure on companies to upgrade their legacy applications. Application upgrade is the process of updating or updating software or architecture to achieve flexibility and innovation in business operations.
Application upgrades based on a we compose The application architecture can help businesses outperform the competition by 80% in terms of the speed of implementing new features, according to Gartner.
What is technical debt?
Accelerating application development usually generates technical debt, which arises when companies deliver less than optimal code – code that may later need to be optimized.
The vFunction Assessment Hub provides a technical assessment of debt that analyzes the code and the associated risks of changing it. This is followed by the launch in 2021 of the vFunction Modernization Hub, which uses the AI and passive agent of the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) to turn complex legacy applications, often called monoliths and megaliths, into microservices.
“Debt technical assessment shows how easy or difficult it is to maintain implementation. The more complex or complex the code, the more difficult it is to monitor or manage. The code becomes complicated due to too many interdependencies that are woven into it. This means that a change will affect many parts of the code, which increases the risk of changing it, “said Moti Rafalin, CEO of vFunction.
Modern software needs to be built in a modular way with well-defined APIs that allow businesses to accelerate engineering processes and enable them to scale applications and unlock the true potential to move to the cloud, Rafalin said.
CIOs prioritize modernization efforts
“Given the complexity and interdependence of today’s multi-layered applications, CIOs and technology leaders need to prioritize their modernization efforts before they can pull threads that can unravel further complexity,” said Jason English, chief executive. analyzer in Intellyx.
“The VFunction Assessment Hub provides an entry point for assessing the return on investment from breaking down inherited monoliths and unleashing dependencies, so refactoring efforts can be better aligned with business goals,” said English.
Rafalin of vFunction believes that the concept of application upgrades is often confused with the term migration, in which enterprises migrate their existing applications to the cloud.
The move to the cloud provides opportunities for devops and a change in legacy application code is needed to upgrade any existing legacy application, the CEO said, adding that the evaluation tool will act as a pre-sales tool for its upgrade platform.
“Because people want to migrate to the cloud, ‘lifting and moving’ monolithic applications is not enough,” agreed Stephen Dickens, a senior analyst at Futurum Research.
vFunction also has partnerships with hyperscalers such as AWS, Oracle, Google Cloud and Microsoft to complement the capabilities of their application upgrade platforms to help businesses move to the cloud, Rafalin said.
The vFunction Evaluation Center, which is now publicly available and in pilot stages with 12 vFunction clients, is now in a free trial and is available in the AWS Marketplace.
The tool is also available through vFunction’s partnerships with leading system integrators and cloud service providers, Rafalin said.
