These are the 2024 CNBC Disruptor 50 companies

It’s fair to say that AI is all over the 12th annual CNBC Disruptor 50 list.

Roughly two-thirds of the 50 companies on the Disruptor 50 list describe AI as “critical” to their business. And it starts at the very top: for the first time, a company repeats itself as number 1 on the list: OpenAI.

The reworking of AI in the market extends much further. Thirteen of the 2024 disruptors call themselves “generative AI companies,” including five of the top 10 on this year’s list, a group that collectively raised at least $5.5 billion from investors in the past year.

Companies in industries ranging from cybersecurity to agriculture are also identifying AI as mission critical. And in an important shift from the previous Silicon Valley-led era of disruptive innovation, the “better, faster, cheaper” mantra, funded almost entirely by venture capital firms, is on its way out.

AI requires huge capital investment, which inevitably leads to close partnership with established giants, not just disruptive competition.

In total, 2024 Disruptors has grossed $70 billion for a total estimated valuation of $436 billion.
