HMD Global is now focusing on its own phone brands. The company is unveiling its new smartphones in different parts of the world. We previously reported on the HMD smartphone for the US market. Now it’s time for Indian fans to rejoice as HMD is bringing its first smartphone to India. While details about the phone remain scarce, the unique marketing strategy behind it is noteworthy. In this article, we will look at this strategy below.
HMD asked fans to name their phone
The company has decided to take a different approach to naming its first phone in India, as reported by NokiaMob. This was done for the obvious reasons: marketing. Fans gave different ideas, such as Knife, Tremor and Indhumanoid. Some fans even gave the idea to name it after their favorite anime, like Naruto. While some of them took a fun approach, giving ideas like Sharpsy, Giggles, etc.
After a dozen suggestions from fans, the company has finally decided on the name of its phone. This was announced by Rajasthan Royals, which is the official partner of HMD in India. The name chosen for India’s first HMD phone is ‘Arrow’.

HMD Arrow seems like a decent name; not too bold as some of the fans recommend. Ultimately, it will be a budget oriented device as the company is focusing on the budget market for now. Apart from the name, the only other official detail is that the phone will be unveiled in a few weeks.
Will this marketing strategy work?
This strategy has undoubtedly generated more buzz about the upcoming phone than traditional methods would. However, at the end of the day, customers will choose a phone that offers value. Therefore, the company should not forget that it is launching a phone in a saturated market and needs to offer good value for money to succeed. However, we will keep you updated when we have more information about the HMD Arrow.
