The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) was founded in 2000 to support nanotechnology research and development in the United States. Since then, there has been tremendous growth in this field with applications including medicine, electronics, materials, energy generation and consumer products. The NNI defines nanotechnology as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension ranging in size from 1 to 100 nanometers.
