Major Finnish telecom operator Nokia estimates that by 2030, demand for internet networks will increase with advanced technologies such as Web3, Metaverse and artificial intelligence taking center stage. Moving forward, Nokia is planning strategies to make its equipment and services capable of handling the demand load. The company will place a special focus on synchronizing its products and services with smart contracts and blockchains to thrive in the coming era of decentralization.
Nokia released its Technology Strategy 2030 report this week, outlining the direction it plans to take in the coming years as technology evolves and becomes more sophisticated. The telecommunications infrastructure provider estimates that network demand over the next seven years is likely to grow by 22% to 25%.
“In the coming years, networks will undergo a significant evolution and must become cognitive and automated ecosystems capable of responding to the transforming needs and work patterns of different organizations, industries and consumers.” Advances in metaverse, Web3, semiconductor, software, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies will greatly expand the scope of what is possible, connecting and uniting the human, physical and digital worlds to help solve some of the biggest global challenges, we face, ” on report says.
In recent years, the currently available network infrastructure has had to face several challenges, especially related to security and cyber security. Despite the hiccups and problems, however, network providers have managed to push the aforementioned technologies into the world. Nokia believes that going into the later years, network infrastructure providers will have to step up their game because the technology will only get more advanced.
Nokia has been exploring the field of the metaverse since 2022 – when it is reported launched research work and studies exploring industrial use cases of metaverse technology. A fully functional virtual universe, the metaverse creates a digital destination where people can interact and work as avatars – right from the comfort of their homes. The company was also able to use “digital twin technology” to create a future network architecture compatible with advanced metaverse and human augmentation use cases. Digital twin technology is capable of seamlessly pairing a virtual model to a physical object.
Along with the metaverse, Nokia predicts that the deeper technologies such as Generative AI and virtual reality (VR) access devices penetrate, the more the demand for a secure network will escalate.
“Through networks that sense, think and act, we work with our customers and partners to create the digital services and applications of the future. Our products and solutions bring digitization to physical industries and cities, helping them decarbonize and increase efficiency, productivity and safety,” the Nokia report noted.
