Air purifiers can be a good option for days when pollen counts are high or there’s another wildfire burning in your region — in other words, when opening a window to let in fresh air isn’t an option. The Core 400S smart purifier can automatically detect when there is a high content of dust particles in the air, adjusting the fan speed accordingly. And thankfully, the top speed isn’t disturbingly loud, but still circulates a good amount of air. The built-in controls are easy, and the associated app is relatively easy to set schedules and the like—once you get past the redundant forums, wellness, and shopping tabs in the cluttered app.

It uses a three-stage system consisting of a pre-filter to capture pet hair and larger dust particles, then a layer of activated carbon to capture odors and VOCs. Then there is a HEPA filter to remove pollen, mold and even some bacteria from the air. The machine is also Energy Star and CARB certified. The design is not the most inspired, but the Core 400S does its job well.
