Apple revealed some new features today, and one of the marquees’ features is that they can drive two external displays while the lid is closed. It’s pretty weird when the Air line gets a feature that the more powerful MacBook Pro line lacks, but Apple is on top. The company has just announced that this feature is also coming to standard M3 MacBook Pro laptops via a software update,

There are no details on which software update will include the new tool, though 14.4 is in active development, so that’s a possibility. The feature should work just like with the upcoming M3 MacBook Air, as the two lines share a processor and similar architecture.

This update will be for the stock M3 chip. The more powerful versions with the M3 Pro and Max chips can already do this, so the 16-inch model does not require a software update. Previously, you could only use a regular M3 MacBook Pro to drive one external monitor with the lid closed.

Apple Silicon MacBook Pros were able to drive multiple external displays all the way up to the M1 Pro chip, but never with the standard M-series chips. Apple offered no reason why it took so long to launch chips without Pro or Max in the name. In any case, this will be huge for current M3 MacBook Pro owners looking for more screen real estate.
