MetaSocial media platforms Instagram, Facebook and Threads are back online after the platforms were down for about two hours on Tuesday morning.

Facebook and Threads seem to have been particularly affected. None of the apps were loading as of 10 a.m. ET when the outage messages started appearing DownDetector.com. Instagram feeds were not refreshing for some users, while others were still able to access the app. Many Facebook users were unable to login.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We have resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was affected and apologize for any inconvenience,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote in a post on social media site X on Tuesday.

The outages came on the same day as the U.S. Super Tuesday presidential primaries, when 16 states and one territory head to the polls. The outages are a problem for presidential campaigns, which rely heavily on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to reach voters.

The hashtags “#instagramdown” and “#facebookoutage” were trending on X on Tuesday morning. Meta shares fell more than 1%.

Meta is also experiencing “major disruption” to its Meta Admin Center, Facebook and Instagram stores, and WhatsApp Business API, according to a company website which tracks the status of its business products. Its Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, Facebook Login, Graph API and Marketing API were recovering from outages as of 12pm ET.

Google’s YouTube too confirmed some of its users experienced problems on Tuesday, such as loading problems, a blank homepage and errors when trying to play YouTube Shorts. YouTube directed users to follow its “Help community” post for more details, according to a post by X.

Some users are also having problems with Google’s Gmail, according to the company status panel. Users may experience delays in email delivery, the dashboard says. It is unclear if these issues are related to the Meta outages.

Meta’s service outages follow a major outage in 2021 when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for more than six hours. At the time, Facebook, now Meta, said the outage was caused by “configuration changes to core routers.”
