Streamflation is real. Peacock has just announced another price hike, less than a year after . The new price will be $8 per month for Peacock with ads and $14 per month for the ad-free experience starting July 18 for new subscribers and August 17 for existing users. The ad-free subscription will be the same price as Disney+ and almost as much as Netflix. but was it that okay?

To put that into perspective, just a year ago, a Peacock subscription cost you just $5 to $10 a month, depending on whether you used ads or not. Then there was a $1 increase last summer and now a $2 increase this summer. If this growth rate continues, Peacock will be worth $260,000 a month by 2040, and that’s with ads. But can you really put a price on whether Jim and Pam ever kiss?

There is a method to Peacock’s pricing madness. The 2024 Summer Olympics and the streamer will show “every sport and event, including all 329 medal events.” The platform will also host replays of the entire event, curated videos and original commentary. The Olympics begin on July 26, just eight days after the start of price increases for new subscribers. Take that cheddar to the Olympic crowd, Peacock, but good luck keeping the subscribers after the games are over.

Peacock is simply following the market here, as competing streaming services. Almost every major streaming platform has gotten more expensive in the last year, Apple TV+ and Netflix. Other types of streaming services are not immune. It’s Spotify for US customers later this year, despite what was recently reported .
