Driving the success of 2023 The Super Mario Bros. MovieNintendo and Illumination are releasing a second animated film in the franchise, which is expected to be released on April 3, 2026. The news comes from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself, who tweeted it from Nintendo of America bill on Sunday as part of the ongoing Mario Day festivities. Details are so scarce, but Miyamoto says the team is “thinking about expanding Mario’s world even further, and it’s going to have a bright and fun story.”

Based on its description, it doesn’t look like it will be a direct sequel to the first, though that remains to be seen. In an also featuring Miyamoto, Illumination’s Chris Meledandri said the team is now “storyboarding scenes and developing scene designs for new environments.” Animations should start soon. The next film, set in the world of Super Mario Bros., will be released in the US and other territories on April 3, 2026, before coming to other regions later that month.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it was released last April, becoming the highest-grossing video game movie at its premiere. It reached $1.3 billion worldwide by early June, Diversity reported.
