Driving the success of 2023 The Super Mario Bros. MovieNintendo and Illumination are releasing a second animated film in the franchise, which is expected to be released on April 3, 2026. The news comes from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself, who tweeted it from Nintendo of America bill on Sunday as part of the ongoing Mario Day festivities. Details are so scarce, but Miyamoto says the team is “thinking about expanding Mario’s world even further, and it’s going to have a bright and fun story.”
This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is scheduled for theatrical release on April 3, 2026 in the US and many other markets, as well as throughout the month of April in other territories. [1/2]

Based on its description, it doesn’t look like it will be a direct sequel to the first, though that remains to be seen. In an also featuring Miyamoto, Illumination’s Chris Meledandri said the team is now “storyboarding scenes and developing scene designs for new environments.” Animations should start soon. The next film, set in the world of Super Mario Bros., will be released in the US and other territories on April 3, 2026, before coming to other regions later that month.
