Every gram counts on commercial flights. Materials scientists at Kobe University have discovered ‘nanospheres’, which are nearly invisible silicon crystals. Particles can reflect light thanks to very large and efficient scattering, research published in ACS Applied Nano Matter log details. The result can mean covering a surface in vivid color while adding only 10 percent of the weight of an aircraft paint job for the same effect.
Minoru and Hiroshi’s discovery focuses on structural rather than pigment color to show and maintain hues. The former absorbs wavelengths while reflecting those that the human eye perceives. Structural colors, on the other hand, are intense and bright because light interacts with micro- and nanostructures. Although the main commercial benefits are for aircraft, the paint can have many more uses just because of its brightness.

Framework sells its cheapest modular laptop. It has reduced the price of its B-stock Factory Seconds systems (which are built with surplus parts and new components). As such, it is now offering a barebones Framework Laptop 13 configuration for under $500 for the first time. The 13-inch machine comes with an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor with Iris Xe graphics. So the CPU should be enough for most basic tasks and some moderate gaming. However, you’ll need to add RAM, memory, power, an operating system, and (probably) even a Wi-Fi card.
